Fuel for Flight: What Delivering Workplace Wellness to Jetstar Taught Me

Earlier this year I flew to Sydney to deliver a health and wellbeing session for Jetstar employees. It is one of those days I come back to often, not because of anything dramatic, but because of what happens in a room when people realise that the way they are feeling is not inevitable.

Airline staff face a particular set of challenges that most wellness content completely ignores. Irregular hours. Long shifts. Disrupted sleep. The constant demand to stay switched on when your body clock is telling you something entirely different. The Jetstar team were not struggling because they lacked motivation. They were struggling because nobody had ever given them tools that worked with their actual lives.

That is the gap workplace wellness so often fails to close.

Energy is not a willpower problem

Most people associate workplace energy with caffeine and pushing through. And for a while, that works. Then it stops working, and the answer is usually more coffee, which works a little less, until the 3pm slump is just a fact of life that everyone has accepted.

What we explored in the session was a different frame entirely. Sustainable energy is not about stimulants. It is about supporting your body's natural rhythm through what you eat, when you eat it, and how you structure the rest of your day around it. When those things are right, the energy follows without the crash.

The five areas we focused on:

  • Protein at every meal. Not in a complicated way — just making sure each meal has enough protein to slow digestion, stabilise blood sugar, and carry you through to the next one without a dip. This alone eliminates the 3pm slump for most people.

  • Meal timing. Blood sugar instability is one of the most common and most overlooked causes of fatigue and irritability at work. Eating at regular intervals, and not skipping meals during long shifts, makes a significant difference to how people feel by the end of the day.

  • Movement and light between shifts. Even a few minutes of natural light and movement resets the nervous system in a way that no amount of desk stretching can replicate. This was the one that surprised people the most.

  • Caffeine timing, not just quantity. Most people know there is a limit. Fewer people know that the timing matters just as much as the number. Shifting the first coffee even slightly, and avoiding caffeine in the afternoon, changes sleep quality dramatically.

  • Reading food labels. The foods marketed to shift workers as convenient and healthy are often quietly working against them. Once people understand what they are actually eating, they make different choices without being told to.

What the Jetstar session reminded me

What stood out most was not the content itself. It was the relief in the room when people realised the advice was realistic. Not a complete overhaul. Not a plan that required meal prepping on a Sunday afternoon they do not have. Just a handful of practical, evidence-based shifts that fit into a day that is already full.

That is what workplace wellness should feel like. Not another thing on the list. A set of tools that make the existing list more manageable.

When people understand how nutrition affects their energy, focus, and mood, they do not feel overwhelmed by it. They feel capable. That shift in how they relate to their own health is the thing that lasts long after the session ends.

Bringing this to your team

Since the Jetstar session, I have delivered workplace wellness programs to teams across the aviation industry and beyond. Every group is different, but the fundamentals are the same: practical nutrition education, realistic strategies, and the kind of content that people actually remember and use.

If your organisation is looking for a lunch and learn workshop or a longer wellness program, I would love to talk about what that could look like for your team. The investment in your people's health is one of the most direct investments you can make in how they show up to work.
